WILDWOOD – Wildwood City and North Wildwood Firefighters, along with the Wildwood Beach Patrol, conducted their annual Water Rescue Refresher Training, which is held annually by those departments in preparation for the busy summer season.
The departments began working together about 5 years ago to respond to water emergencies. Typically, the beach patrol will handle all water related emergencies during a summer day while on-duty. The issue arises during the times when beaches are unprotected at night or during the ?bumper? seasons (May-June, September-October) when the beach patrol is not staffed. Both municipalities saw a need for added protection and turned to their fire departments to fill this gap.
Wildwood City and North Wildwood are fortunate in that they have a Career Fire Division within their fire departments that handle all initial Fire, EMS, Haz Mat and Technical Rescue incidents (Rope Rescues, Jaws of Life and Confined Space). Because of this it was an easy transformation to also include Water Rescue incidents.
The departments annually respond to about a dozen such emergencies.
Just this past Friday evening Wildwood City Firefighters responded to persons in distress at Cresse and the Beach. Luckily, all the subjects were out of the water prior to firefighters arriving within three-minutes of the call for help.
