WILDWOOD — The city declared July 25 as the “Children’s Fresh Air Home Day.”
Commissioner Bill Davenport presented a proclamation during the community meet and greet barbeque at the Children’s Fresh Air Home (CFAH), hosted by the Board of Directors and the Home Advisory Committee.
The event kicked off the home’s Century Campaign, designed to address the major capital improvements required to ensure the organization’s service to future generations.
The home here at 1100 Surf Avenue needs more than good intentions, it needs major re-pairs in order to continue to provide a summer vacation experience to children in need.
The CFAH is a faith-based, non-profit organization that first began as a mission program by L. Ida Dukes in 1896.
Since then approximately 180 boys and girls a season get everything they need to enjoy a vacation at the shore. The staff, comprised mostly of volunteers, gives a significant amount of time to make a difference in the lives of these children.
But since the 2006 season, the board of directors made the decision not to open the home for due to the condition of the building. Board President Milt McFalls estimated the necessary repairs, plus the cost of updated furniture and supplies, would run somewhere be-tween $4-5 million.
The program has continued, albeit in a different location, such as Camp Haluwasa in Hammonton.
The CFAH in this city has been funded entirely through donations and relies on the community’s support for the major capital improvement program for the home.
