Wildwood Crest Responds to Citizen’s Inquiry

By Press Release

WILDWOOD CREST — The Borough of Wildwood Crest has conducted a review of personnel records concerning accumulated leave time of former Police Chief Thomas DePaul after an inquiry was made by a resident at the regular meeting of the borough’s Board of Commissioners on March 18.
The resident had inquired whether the former chief was afforded an extension of his leave time from 2013 into 2014.
A review of borough records by the borough’s labor counsel and an inquiry to the borough’s chief financial officer indicates no extension to the former chief’s accumulated leave time was granted.
According to the review of borough records, the former police chief separated from employment with the borough effective Dec. 31, 2013 (see attached Certification of Service and Final Salary). His retirement date for New Jersey Police and Fireman’s Retirement System purposes was Jan. 1, 2014. An effective retirement date under that system generally must be the first of the month after employment has ceased.
The former police chief was paid only for accumulated and unused leave time remaining as of Dec. 31, 2013. He did not earn and therefore was not paid for any leave time earned after Dec. 31, 2013, according to the borough’s review.
The borough hopes this review alleviates any misconception of the facts surrounding Chief DePaul’s separation from employment with the borough.
