MIDDLE TOWNSHIP PRESS RELEASE:
$400,000 Grant for Phase III Renovation Work at Historic Whitesboro School Proceeds
The third and final phase of renovation work at the 1908 former whitesboro school will be completed in late 2009. Grant funding was provided by DCA small cities program
COURT HOUSE — Middle Township Committeeman Steve Barry announced that Capri Construction is proceeding with the final phase (Phase III) of renovation work at the former Whitesboro School.
This historic structure was built in 1908 and served as the schoolhouse for generations of Whitesboro children.
This project has been funded by $1,200,000 in grant funds from the N.J. Department of Community Affairs. Middle township is contributing an additional $240,000 in labor through its public works department.
Barry stated, “Since 2005 the township has secured three separate $400,000 grant awards to reverse structural deterioration, conduct lead paint abatement, provide for handicapped access and to improve all of the building’s basic systems. Phase III, which will conclude the township’s four-year renovation effort, includes new bathrooms, handicap access, interior and exterior doors, trim work, interior painting, floor finishing, parking lot improvements and landscaping.”
Capri construction is expected to complete its work by the end of 2009.
The former school today serves as a community services center serving the whitesboro neighborhood. It was most recently utilized by Head Start and Cape Human Resources, a community action agency that provides weatherization, heating assistance and food pantry programs.
