COURT HOUSE – Middle Township Committee approved a long-term lease of township property to the U.S. Postal Service for a new Whitesboro Post Office June 17. The committee also passed a resolution urging Congress to designate the facility as the George H. White Post Office.
The lease of property at Route 9 and Main Street provides a prominent location for a post office branch and preserves the unique zip code (08252) for Whitesboro. The lease is for five years with available five-year renewals through 2044. Mayor Timothy Donohue said preserving a post office in Whitesboro was a township priority.
By asking to have the facility named for George White, the township was seeking to honor the namesake founder of the historic community. White was the last African-American congressman during the Reconstruction Era, serving for North Carolina. In 1901, White helped establish Whitesboro by purchasing 2,000 acres of land north of Cape May for $14,000.
