West Cape May to Extend Bike Path

By Jack Fichter

WEST CAPE MAY— Bicycle riders can look forward to a safer trip along Park Boulevard next year thanks to a $180,0000 grant for the state Department of Transportation (DOT).
The grant will extend the bike path on Park Boulevard between Emerald and Central avenues. Borough Engineer Ray Roberts, of Remington Vernick, said Park Boulevard will be widened, stripes will be painted to denote the bike lane. He said curb and sidewalk would be installed from Emerald Avenue to Leaming Avenue.
From Leaming Avenue to Central Avenue, the project involves just widening the road, painting stripes and installing signs, said Roberts.
A United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) road repair, paving and widening project is beginning at Leaming Avenue working towards Broadway on Park Boulevard. He suggested tying the two projects together in one bid document for “efficiency and cost.”
Roberts said phase two of the bike path was funded. He said depending on the bids, the borough may be able to extend the bike path into phase three in conjunction with the USDA project.
“Our goal is to extend the bike path from Emerald up to Broadway,” said Roberts.
He said sidewalks would only be installed on the “Broadway” (northwest) side of Park Boulevard.
Part of the DOT grant includes putting in a surface for parking along Park Boulevard that could aid events at Wilbraham Park. Those who parked in the bike lane on Park Boulevard in previous years received parking tickets.
The bike lane would remain open despite the area for parking, said Roberts. He said it would accommodate the “vehicular traffic and the bike traffic in a safe manner.”
The projected date for the start of construction is after Labor Day.
