West Cape May Awards Trash/Recycling Contract to Blue Diamond

By Jack Fichter

WEST CAPE MAY — Borough Commission awarded a five-year contract Wed., Dec. 8 to Blue Diamond Disposal Inc. to collect both residential garbage and recyclables.
The borough’s former contracted trash hauler, Waste Management, only picked up garbage while borough employees collected recyclables.
Blue Diamond’s first year bid to the borough was $73,200. That will increase to $74,400 in the second year of the contract, $76,500 in the third year, $78,600 in the fourth year and $79,800 in the final year.
Waste Management’s first year bid for garbage and recyclable collection was $108,000. EarthTech submitted a bid of $80,600.
Tipping fees at the county landfill are in addition to the base fees, said Mayor Pamela Kaithern.
The borough’s existing contract with Waste Management, to just pick up garbage, totaled more than $90,000 this year, she said.
“In year five of the new contract, we’ll be paying substantially less than we are paying currently,” said the mayor.
Bids covering residential garbage collection, not including recycling were: Waste Management: $60,000, EarthTech: $52,000 and Blue Diamond: $48,000.
The borough purchased a new recycling truck last year using $50,000 from the county’s Joint Venture Fund and recycling grant funds.
Kaithern said the borough would not sell the truck and look at picking up grass clippings and leaves. Currently, residents must bring organic recyclables to a trash container behind Borough Hall.
Commissioner Peter Burke said the borough would continue to use the truck to pick up commercial recyclables.
