COURT HOUSE – If you are looking to go biking in Cape May County or maybe visit a park or even a winery then going on-line to the Cape May County Government website www.capemaycountygov.net should be your first stop before venturing out.
Freeholder Will Morey announced that the Cape May County GIS Division of the Planning Department has created a site, on the county’s website, that maps fun things to do in Cape May County. The original intent of the site was to accurately map places to ride a bike, walk or run in Cape May County, however, the site now includes mapping capabilities for a variety of activities available to do in the county.
On the site, you can view a description of each path, find out the type of path surface, location and distance. This new way of mapping paths, before you go out, is meant to replace the paper map which can be costly to print and often are out of date before printing is completed.
Breweries, wineries, marinas, boat launching ramps, yacht clubs, farm stands, farm markets, garden centers, municipal, county, state, and federal parks and other points of interest were added to help residents and visitors explore all the county has to offer. Additionally, you can find Lighthouses, museums and boardwalks. The information includes a brief description of activities, contact information and links to the business, municipality, county, state or federal websites.
When the application opens a splash page provides users with directions on how to use the site. You can click on any feature to view information on that feature. The main tool bar on the site includes five query tools at the top of the page where one can search for a particular activity, a “layer” tool so layers can be turned on or off, the “legend” tool that explains what all the symbols mean and a tool for printing. Also, you can toggle between a plain road map and aerial photography in order to see what the location really looks like. Plus the camera icon allows you to access local photos taken by the Planning Department.
The site, developed with the latest Geographic Information Technology using the Application Programming Interface (API) for flexviewer, can be accessed from the homepage of the county website, from the mapping site, the Planning Department web pages and from the Department of Tourism’s website.
