Water Tank Project Starts Monday

By Leslie Truluck

AVALON –– Residents at the north end of the borough may hear some new noises in the neighborhood soon.
A project on the 13th Street water tank begins Monday, Sept. 29, with some phases more noisy than others, to improve efficiency and extend the life of the structure by 12 to 15 years.
Work involves removing all interior and exterior paint from the steel surfaces by sandblasting then applying three coats of paint on the interior and exterior.
Borough officials warned residents via mailed letters and a post on the borough’s Web site that the sandblasting phase is loud and there is no way to suppress the noise.
The interior tank work will be done first and take about three weeks to complete then the exterior will undergo a similar process. The entire project is expected to take six to eight weeks to finish, weather permitting.
Prior to sandblasting the exterior, the contractor will set up a containment system to totally enclose the exterior work area and prevent dust and paint from drifting off the work site.
The New Jersey American Water Company will have an inspector on site to ensure all painting standards and safety and engineering regulations are followed.
The stockade fence around the tower will be replaced and landscaping will be done towards the end of the project.
Coordination with the Atlantic City Electric Company to de-energize the high voltage power lines adjacent to the tank during throughout the project aids worker safety.
Electric service from Atlantic City Electric will not be interrupted as a result of this safety precaution. In addition, there will be no interruption in water service while the tank is not used.
The letter to residents states, “Please be confident that we will make every effort to minimize the impact of this work on our neighbors and the surrounding area. Avalon and the New Jersey American Water Company understands that you expect the best and this fall maintenance program will help us deliver the best in water quality and extend the life of the borough’s investment in the water tank.”
