Vote Ends Board Term Limits

OCEAN CITY – While members expressed reservations, City Council unanimously approved an ordinance removing term limits for service on city boards and commissions.
Some residents say the move will mean fewer voices heard on city issues, as board veterans return for term after term, but city officials say the move is needed because fewer people are volunteering.
At the Dec. 13 City Council meeting, some residents questioned this, pointing to individuals whose applications for appointment were rejected, with the city citing a glut of volunteers.
The week of the vote, the city sent notice seeking volunteers to serve on the Environmental Commission, the Tourism Development Commission, the Historic Preservation Commission, and the Zoning Board.
At the Dec. 13 meeting, council also made appointments to the local assistance board, the library board of trustees, the Shade Tree Commission, the Tourism Development Commission and others.
The ordinance will be revisited in three years, under a sunset provision City Council included.
It will expire if council does not take action at that time.
