Volunteers Needed for Community Tax Service

By Press Release

COURT HOUSE – Cape May County Freeholder Gerald Thornton announced that the Department of Aging is seeking volunteers to assist residents in preparing their tax returns as part of the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program.
The program sponsored by the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) and the Cape May County Board of Chosen Freeholders helps with the preparation of Income tax returns for persons of any age with incomes under $50,000 for free.
Freeholder Thornton said, “In 2011, more than 900 Cape May County residents were assisted in filing their returns by RSVP members through VITA and Tax Credits for the Elderly programs.”
To continue this service for the 2012 filing season, volunteers are needed. If you are able to use a computer and are available from February through April of 2012, at least one day a week, you are invited to join this committed group. The IRS furnishes all materials and training will be given by the IRS at the Social Services Building in Rio Grande in January.
Freeholder Thornton added, “This is a worthwhile program in which volunteer tax assistors provide free, tax preparation services to residents with low to moderate incomes – it is community members helping community members and is a very rewarding experience for our volunteers.”
If you are interested in becoming a volunteer or would like more information about the VITA program, please call RSVP Director Lee Shupert at 886-3400.
