Volunteer Plan Helped

By Vince Conti

AVALON – Avalon Fire Chief Edward Dean reported that the new volunteer firefighter stipend program, initiated by borough council one year ago, had helped increase overnight coverage at the fire station. He noted that the program had been a success in returning existing members to active status. Dean added that the program did not lead to more recruitment of members as expected. Dean recommended a change to the program to allow existing volunteers to opt for up to five overnight shifts per month.
