Voice Concerns on Boulevard

By Camille Sailer

SEA ISLE CITY – At its Oct. 24 meeting, a resident asked Sea Isle City City Council for an update on the Sea Isle Boulevard project.
“What is the remaining scope of work to be done and timelines? I have a lot of doubt about the process of ‘surcharge,'” he said.
Surcharge is the result of the placement of material on a surface that adds load to the protective system of the road.
As a result, he asked whether the city should consider suing the county since surcharge wasn’t used on the Garden State Parkway. Finally, it’s getting more dangerous to use the boulevard as it is now, he commented. Those remarks reflect others that have cropped up from time to time during council meetings over the summer.
To clarify the concerns, Administrator George Savastano, explained, “I’d like the boulevard project to proceed quicker than it has thus far, but I understand the obstacles with expediting the work (such as the environmental restrictions, the requirement for the surcharge, and the need to coordinate installation of utilities).
“I’m satisfied that the county is doing what is necessary to expedite the project and is trying to get the work done as quickly and safely as possible.
“I do not think the city should consider suing the county. The county followed totally acceptable engineering practices in its oversight of the project, and they retained a reputable engineering firm to perform the design,” he added.
