COURT HOUSE — On Jan. 22, at 615 Route 9 South, the doors of the new Court House Post Office opened.
That move took place after postal workers labored throughout the Martin Luther King holiday to make the shift a reality.
Postmaster Rob Hudson gave the Herald a tour of the facility Jan. 24.
The new office that serves 8,000 deliveries in the county seat and into Dennis Township. Making those deliveries are 14 delivery routes. Helping to sort, sell and deliver are some 30 employees.
Hudson said the new office is the county seat’s second “brand new office,” but the last one was built in the middle 1950s in what is now a physicians office on South Main Street.
The post office moved into “temporary” headquarters behind Cape Savings Bank on North Main Street in 1981. After 27 years in that temporary location, the office moved into its new location.
Among features of the new office is an additional retail window for busy times, like tax time and the holidays, 100 additional post office boxes available for rent, and a lot more parking than the former post office at 221 North Main Street.
Some punch list items remain to be completed, and a grand opening will be announced, likely in April, according to Hudson.
