PETERSBURG – At the regular meeting of Upper Township committee Feb. 22 during public comment several residents had questions regarding trash pickup and use of trash cans.
One asked about the township’s potential change under consideration to have several streets designated for residents to put their trash only on one side of the street. The resident indicated that he thought doing so could be hazardous for residents.
Mayor Richard Palombo and Councilman John Coggins stated that this change is being considered only for several streets to increase efficiency of pickup by the township’s automatic trash collection trucks and additionally to improve safety of pickups on these streets.
It was pointed out by committee that the streets under consideration are, for the most part, short, dead-end streets or streets with few residents on a cul-de-sac.
Committee expressed its concern about safety issues under the current system of trash pickup by the township’s automatic trash pickup trucks on these streets. The change discussed is still under consideration.
Another resident asked why residents can’t use their own trash cans on those occasions when they have more trash that can fit into the trash cans provided to all residents by the township?
Several committee members indicated that standardization makes operations more efficient and that the trash cans currently being used are strong, durable and, because the township owns the cans, they can be repaired or replaced when need arises.
Palombo pointed that any trash cans that do not meet the township’s standards might be of lesser quality, could be prone to breaking, tipping or might not have a lid, all leading to the potential for litter, as was the case before the township moved to using the current cans.
In other business Paul Dietrich, municipal engineer, informed committee that the township and county are updating the county and township Hazard Mitigation Plan and are looking for input from stakeholders in Upper Township.
