Upper Proposes Higher Bulkheads

PETERSBURG – At its Nov. 5 meeting, Upper Township Committee approved, on introduction, an ordinance to amend construction of bulkheads with the goals of preventing flooding and protecting property from storm surge.
Of special interest to Strathmere residents has been bulkhead height. In Strathmere the ordinance also addresses bulkhead height that is non-ocean frontage, such as along the Tuckahoe River and bayside.
The proposed ordinance and whether to introduce new heights, if at all, have been the subject of two town hall meetings organized by the municipality since June.
According to township Engineer Paul Dietrich, “The bulkhead height is being raised from seven feet to eight feet NAVD 1988, (North American Vertical Datum of 1988 is a reference for sea height.). We are also requiring that all bulkheads along Bayview Drive must be raised to eight feet within 10 years which would be Jan. 1, 2029.”
Second reading and public comment will be at committee meeting Dec. 3.
