PETERSBURG – At its Jan. 22 meeting, Upper Township Committee debated approval of a resolution to renew a 2018 mining license for the George Harms Co. which it ultimately approved.
The Harms’ site, adjacent to Amanda Field and other township property, has been the scene of numerous perimeter breaches by illegal all-terrain-vehicles and motorcycle riders attracted by its steep slag hills.
“This is an attractive nuisance since they’re not actively mining there and it’s easy to get in and ride around,” said Township Engineer Paul Dietrich. “It’s like a finger in the dike, there’s a hole here, and that’s fixed, then another hole. They graded down the slopes and are doing what we’re asking with about 90 percent of the township perimeter secured.
“Per the Planning Board’s approved site plan they have an on-going obligation to secure their perimeters. Further, the state police have issued summons to four of the riders, so the word is getting out that it’s not a good idea to ride there.”
“What’s the assurance that if we issue this license, they will continue to comply?” asked Mayor Richard Palombo.
“They are moving in the right direction and have promised to put in additional fencing within two months. Any site plan violation, and we can take them to municipal court,” answered Solicitor Daniel Young.
