Upper Committee Lauds Eagle Scout, Little League Team, Animal Control

By Vince Conti

PETERSBURG – The Upper Township Committee meeting Aug. 25 began on a celebratory note. Committee presented a proclamation to Scott Hogan who recently attained the designation of Eagle Scout. Just a few weeks ago, Hogan was one of the individuals who helped Ryan Casey achieve his Eagle Scout designation. Now it is Hogan who has climbed the heights.
“We have been very fortunate in the township to have several young men achieve the designation of Eagle Scout,” Mayor Richard Palombo noted. Only about 2 percent of the millions who participate in the Boy Scouts of America attain the level of Eagle Scout.
Little League Champs
Committee also passed a resolution congratulating the Upper Township Little League (9-10 year olds) team which won the 2014 East Regional Championship. The team played a 23 game season ending with the championship game in Cranston, R.I. There is no World Series competition for the 9-10 year old group. Palombo promised a recognition ceremony at a future committee meeting. “What a season they had,” he said.
Also congratulated was the Ocean City/Upper Township Little League 11-12 year old team for becoming the New Jersey Section 4 Champions.
Stagecoach Road
Prior to the designated agenda, committee discussed a concern with the condition of a stretch of Stagecoach Road. A recent drainage project, which still has continuing work ahead, is focused in that area. The discussion noted potholes and other safety concerns that committee members, especially Deputy Mayor Antonio Inserra, felt the Cape May County was not responding in an appropriate manner. The township will document the areas in need of repair and formally notify the county.
North Strathmere
Palombo warned residents and vacationers to “stay alert” as a tropical storm passed off the coast with predictions of strong rip tides. He noted that the township has already seen significant erosion caused by high tides in the north end of Strathmere and that several rescues have been performed due to rip currents in the area this summer. He cited a specific recent incident where six people needed to be rescued after a boat capsized. While no one had significant injuries, it was potentially a very dangerous situation. He urged that swimmers only enter the water in protected areas with lifeguards on duty.
Animal Control
Committee approved a resolution authorizing the mayor to sign a contract with Shore Veterinarian Animal Control Services, LLC for animal control services in the township. This represents a continuation of the relationship between Shore Animal Control and the township.
In addition to Upper Township, Shore Animal Control, a company founded in 2009, provides its services to Lower Township, Dennis Township, West Cape May, Woodbine and Wildwood.
