WHITESBORO– A single vehicle crash caused a widespread power outage in most of Middle Township and parts of Stone Harbor on Saturday, March 27, at 4:41 a.m. Middle Township Police said.
Police communications received numerous calls of power outages and the loud sound of an explosion in the Whitesboro area.
Upon further investigation, it was learned that an SUV type vehicle struck a main utility pole on Reeves Street, between Ticks and Gibbbs Streets in Whitesboro.
Neighbors in the area, checking on the cause of the explosion, looked outside and reported seeing the vehicle flee the scene.
Patrols then began a search of the area for the suspect vehicle.
A short time later, Joseph McCorriston, a Cape May County Corrections Officer, spotted the vehicle traveling south on Route 9, in Cape May Court House. McCorriston alerted patrols of the vehicle’s location.
Ptl, Steven Novsak responded to the scene, and subsequently identified the vehicle as having been involved in the crash. As a result, Denise M. Pomykacz, 26, of Route 130, Burlington, NJ, was taken into custody, and charged with:
DUI
Careless Driving
Failure to Report a Motor Vehicle Crash
Leaving the Scene of an Accident
Failure to Produce vehicle registration and insurance documents.
Pomykacz had one adult passenger in her vehicle at the time of the crash, and neither occupant was injured during the incident.
Power was lost from the Whitesboro area, north, to include the Borough of Stone Harbor, who is connected to that power grid. At the height of the outage 18,106 people were without power according to Atlantic City Electric.
Police spent most of the day responding to alarm calls, and assisting traffic through major intersections of the township, as a result of the loss in power.
The Middle Township Police Department credits the observations of Officer Joseph McCorriston, and the assistance of the Cape May Fire Department, Fire Police, and Green Creek Fire Police, and the Rio Grande Fire Company, with this incident.Atlantic City Electric Outage Map
