TRENTON – UPDATE: Following yesterday’s establishment of the Hurricane Sandy New Jersey Relief Fund to raise funds and resources to help New Jersey families impacted by the devastation of the storm, Governor Chris Christie and First Lady Mary Pat Christie announced the launch of a website for the fund on Nov. 4. New Jerseyans can visit www.SandyNJReliefFund.org to make donations online.
Governor Christie and First Lady Mary Pat Christie announced on Nov. 3 the formation of the Hurricane Sandy New Jersey Relief Fund to help residents impacted by the recent superstorm that wrought damage and destruction in New Jersey and along the Jersey Shore earlier this week.
“As recovery efforts continue, we know that even greater needs will become apparent for our families who have been impacted so deeply and extensively by this disaster,” said Governor Christie. “New Jerseyans are not only tough and resilient – as we’ve already seen powerfully through the storm and initial recovery period – they are caring, generous and kind. Above all, we are a community and we take care of each other. As the recovery proceeds over the weeks and months, this fund will give us an avenue to collect and distribute those resources to our neighbors and communities and assist as many of our families as possible.”
While New Jersey remains in the initial stages of recovery, helping New Jerseyans return as close to normalcy as quickly as possible, recovering from the devastation of Sandy will take much more time, resources, and assistance to families who need it. The Hurricane Sandy New Jersey Relief Fund will provide a critical mechanism to collect donations and assistance and provide assistance to families who have been effected by the destruction of the storm.
“Hurricane Sandy has brought unthinkable devastation to parts of our Garden State, destroying homes, businesses and some of New Jersey’s most identifiable icons,” said First Lady Mary Pat Christie, who will serve as Chair of the Fund. “The images and stories of the damage are heartbreaking. In the aftermath, we must support and help our friends, neighbors and so many others impacted by the storm. The Hurricane Sandy New Jersey Relief Fund is an important ways to help our citizens rebuild their lives.”
The Governor and First Lady also announced the first major gift of $2.5 million to the relief fund from the Hess Corporation and John Hess, a New Jersey native.
“John Hess has shown what the spirit of our state is all about through this crisis,” said Governor Christie and First Lady Christie. “His generous gift to the relief fund and his cooperation with his business competitors to meet their supply needs, in order to ease the strain on access to gasoline for the public, are extraordinary acts of caring for our state. We are grateful to John for stepping up in a big way during this recovery and setting an example for the rest of New Jersey.”
A website for the Hurricane Sandy New Jersey Relief Fund is expected to be launched soon.
