CAPE MAY BEACH — Lower Township police have evacuated homes and the bomb squad was summoned to this community after a worker dug up a mortar shell at a construction site on Fri., Sept. 24.
According to the Press of Atlantic City, the eight-by-four inch mortar shell was found at a site at Shore Drive and Dune Road.
Police said the neighborhood was evacuated for a three-block area and a military bomb disposal unit was contacted. Upon the arrival of the 177th Fighter Wing Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team, the device was x-rayed to determine the contents before removing the item from the area.
The shell identified by the disposal team as a three-inch World War II High Explosive Round was taken to a local secluded pit area were it was detonated. Evacuated persons were offered shelter at the Villas Fire Department but decided to remain in the area outside of the secured zone until the shell was removed and they could return to their homes.
The Lower Township Police Department was assisted by the Villas Fire Department, Lower Township Rescue, Lower Township OEM and 177th Fighter Wing Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team.
