Some of the more serious incidents handled by the police department during the month of January included:
• On Jan. 11, a man was arrested on Croydon Drive in North Cape May after officers responded to a burglary in progress call. The man was charged with burglary and theft from a residence.
• On Jan. 24, officers responded to a major structure fire at the end of Heather Lane in Erma. All three of the township’s fire departments fought the blaze, which was ruled an arson.
• On Jan. 24, officers responded to the Villas 7-11 after the clerk there reported that he was assaulted and knocked unconscious. Following an investigation, officers arrested and charged a man for aggravated assault in this incident.
• On Jan. 31, officers responded to a two-car fatal motor vehicle accident in the area of Seashore and Jonathan Hoffman roads in which an 83-year-old Connecticut man was killed. Investigation on scene revealed that the deceased driver had failed to yield to oncoming traffic after going through a stop sign.
