Oct. 23
Archives Day
The Ninth Annual Archives Day Presentation entitled “Early School Houses and the Early Community School Board in Cape May County” will take place on Oct. 23 beginning at 10 a.m. in the Old Historic Courthouse, located at 11 N. Main Street here. Coffee and tea will be served at 9:30 a.m. and an Archives Tour will follow the presentation. County Clerk Rita Marie Fulginiti will offer historical document exhibits and present an overview of the historical collections maintained in the County Clerk’s Archives. Laurie Thomas, a local historian and employee of the County Clerk’s Office will present a look into the formation of early education in Cape May County particularly the one room school house and community based “school board” of the 1800’s. At the conclusion of the program, all are invited to return to the County Clerk’s Archives for a tour and hands-on training session in the use of public records for research. Deputy County Clerk Diana Hevener and Laurie Thomas will lead the session. The series is held during the month of October which is celebrated as American Archives Month by the Society of American Archivists. The presentation and tour is free and open to the public. For all County flu clinics, if you have a severe allergy to eggs, other vaccine component, or if you have been told by a doctor that you have had Guillain-Barré syndrome, you need to receive the flu vaccine from your personal physician. If you have a severe allergy to Thimerosal, you can receive the vaccine from the Department of Health, but not at the drive-through clinic.

“Boo at the Zoo” – 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The annual “Boo at the Zoo” event will take place on Oct. 26 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Cape May County Park and Zoo. The public is invited to wear a costume to this free family event which includes games, crafts, candy, entertainment, animals and a costume contest dance party.
Registration for the costume contest dance party will start at 10 a.m. followed by the contest at 11 a.m. The Creepy Creatures Animal Show will take place from Noon until 12:30 p.m. with a Creepy Creatures photo opportunity from 12:30 until 2 p.m. Also, attendees will be entertained with the Amazing Larry Vee show from 1 to 2 p.m. and DJ Tony Stef will be spinning the hits from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m.
This special event is free and open to the public. So, take the entire family to the park and zoo for a day of fun and make sure to visit the more than 500 animals that call the Cape May County Zoo home – including our new Giraffe and two new Snow Leopard Cubs.
The Cape May County Zoo is located at 707 Route 9 North in Cape May Court House (Exit 11 off of the Garden State Parkway). The free Zoo is open, weather permitting, 364 days a year – closed on Christmas Day.

2013 Outstanding Service Recognition Award
The Cape May County Department of Aging and Disability Services is accepting nominations for the 2013 Outstanding Service Recognition Award. The purpose of this award is to acknowledge individuals, organizations and/or businesses for their various contributions to improving the quality of life for individuals with disabilities living in Cape May County.

Rutgers Cooperative Extension
Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Cape May County faculty will honor the contributions of RCE community volunteers on Oct. 27 with a Farm to Table Volunteer Appreciation Breakfast at Willow Creek Winery in West Cape May. Tickets are $15 per person and are available at the RCE Office, 355 Courthouse-S.Dennis Road, Cape May Court House, NJ 08210. The breakfast will feature farm fresh products, including breakfast meats purchased at the 2013 Livestock Auction and donated to the event by Cape May County Freeholders Kristine Gabor and Will Morey. “Senior Day in the Park”
The Department of Aging and Disability Services will be hosting a “Senior Day in the Park” on Oct. 28 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Cape May County Park and Zoo located on Route 9 North in Cape May Court House, New Jersey. This event is planned as a day away from the Centers and an opportunity for participants to meet with representatives from the Department of Aging and Area Plan Contract providers. This event is for current senior center participants; please sign-up at your senior center.

Storming for the Vote – Hurricane Sandy Anniversary Lunch Time Program
Cape May County Clerk Rita Marie Fulginiti and the League of Women Voters of Cape May County will jointly present “Storming for the Vote: Hurricane Sandy and The Election,” a powerful 20 minute documentary by the League of Women Voters of New Jersey about Hurricane Sandy’s impact on the 2012 Presidential Election in New Jersey.
This film illustrates how New Jersey voters, election officials, the League and a myriad volunteers came together to make possible the Nov. 6, 2012 General Election. It is a testament to the great spirit of the New Jersey voter to get out to exercise our precious right to vote, even in the most extreme circumstances.
The public is invited to attend this free program which will take place on the first anniversary of Hurricane Sandy touching down in Cape May County on Oct. 29, 2013 at 12:10 p.m.in the Story Time Room at the Main Branch of the Cape May County Library, Mechanic Street, Cape May Court House. Attendees are encouraged to bring a “brown bag lunch” to enjoy during the program. Beverages and desserts will be provided. The program will conclude at 12:45 p.m. to allow time for attendees to get back to work or home.

Community Disabilities Awareness Day Event
Cape May County will host its 5th Annual Community Disabilities Awareness Day on Nov. 16 in Avalon from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Avalon Elementary School. This event is designed as a day of information, food, music and fun not only for people with disabilities but for all who are interested in the agencies and organizations that serve the citizens of Cape May County.
Admission is free and refreshments will be provided. Fare Free Transportation will be available to county residents who reserve a ride by Nov. 8. Also, a Kids Corner is planned, with activities to entertain the children so their parents can speak with and collect disability-related information from the 55 plus exhibitors expected. Exhibitors will include representatives from local and state service agencies, civic organizations, support groups, and commercial vendors specializing in products and services of particular interest to people with disabilities, their families and caregivers.
