The 2013 Coastal Water Monitoring Program in Cape May County will continue through Sept. 3, 2013. The Health Department, in cooperation with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection is continuing its Cooperative Coastal Monitoring Program. A total of sixty-one (61) ocean and eight (8) Back Bay recreational sites have been selected for weekly monitoring. Enterococcus continues to be used as the indicator organism to assess water quality. The maximum estimated enterococcus bacteria in marine waters shall not exceed 104 per 100ml of sample. Two consecutive counts of 104 per 100ml at a sampling site constitute a closing. There are no changes in the monitoring program for the summer of 2013. However, as a result of Super Storm Sandy, lifeguard training and pre-operational assessments of bathing recreational beaches by all coastal municipalities is ongoing.
The cooperative Ocean Outfall Program will maintain its scheduled eight (8) sampling trips from May through September. This program is dedicated to monitor sewage treatment plant effluent discharge to the Atlantic Ocean from outfalls located one mile off Ocean City, Avalon, and Wildwood Crest.
For additional information please contact the Cape May County Health Department Division of Environmental Services, at 465-1209. The public is invited to call the Cape May County Water Quality Hotline at 463-6581. Closings will be on the hotline as well as on the Health Department website at cmchealth.net.
Sept. 5, 2013
Information Session on Addiction
“Putting a Face on Addiction”
On Sept. 5, 2013, Freeholder Gabor will host a family information session, “Putting a Face on Addiction”. The public forum will take place from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the County Administration Building located at 4 Moore Road (in the Crest Haven Complex, exit 11 off the Garden State Parkway), Cape May Court House, New Jersey. The purpose of this initial program is to start the dialogue about drug addiction problems in the county and how we can all help. The program will include first-hand accounts from those battling addiction and mothers who have lost their children to addiction plus support groups and resources available in the county.
Cape May County ranks in the top five for both alcohol and drug-related arrests and treatment admissions, according to the Department of Human Services’ New Jersey Chart book of Substance Abuse Related Social Indicators.
The increase in treatment admissions for heroin and other opiates in Cape May County has more than doubled since 2006, which is higher than all but two counties. Statewide, the number of people seeking treatment for opiate addiction, which is often a precursor to heroin, increased by 12 percent from 2010 to 2011. Last year, New Jersey averaged more than one death to heroin per day and many news reports show that those numbers are trending further in the wrong direction this year.
The county continues to work with the region’s top professionals in law enforcement, education, substance abuse prevention and treatment professionals, as well as healthcare to implement a plan to attack this life threatening problem. The county is interested in hearing directly from families who have been devastated by addiction so they can help spare others from the same fate. Additionally, those who have been able to overcome and reclaim their life can provide us with the most valuable input and help us all recover from this epidemic. All of these entities and the general public are invited to join us on Sept. 5 as we begin the journey to recovery in Cape May County.
Sept. 11, 2013 – 5 p.m.
9/11 Memorial Ceremony
The Cape May County Board of Chosen Freeholders will hold Cape May County’s Twelfth Annual Sept. 11 Memorial Ceremony on Patriot Day, Sept. 11 at 5 p.m. outside the front entrance of the County Administration Building.

Thornton and the Board of Chosen Freeholders and featuring comments from area clergy, elected officials and other dignitaries. Also, the program will include patriotic songs and the U.S. Coast Guard Training Center Recruit Ceremonial Detail.
Additionally, during the ceremony, there will be a dedication of a new 9-11 Memorial that is being constructed outside the main entrance to the County Administration Building in the Patriotic Garden. The Memorial consists of three artifacts from the Sept. 11, 2001 attack on the Pentagon Building.
