Division of Culture and Heritage Celebrates Black History in Cape May County During National Black History Month
Cape May County Freeholder E. Marie Hayes along with the Concerned Citizens of Whitesboro and the Cape May County Division of Culture & Heritage invite the public to celebrate Black History Month in Cape May County with “The Legacy of George Henry White,” an exhibit and documentary at the Beesley House, 605 Route 9 North, Cape May Court House.
The exhibit on George Henry White and the history of Whitesboro is on display through the month of Feb. The exhibit is open each week from Thurs. through Sun., noon until 4 p.m.
The documentary of White’s life, “George Henry White, An American Phoenix,” will be shown, along with a closing reception, Feb. 28, 2014 at 7 p.m.

Citizens Academy
The Cape May County Public Safety Training Center will be holding a Citizens Police Academy starting Feb. 24, 2014. The Academy will take place on Mondays from 7 to 9:30 p.m. through April 21, 2014.
All citizens are invited to sign-up for the Academy, which will provide an overview of the law enforcement function. Topics include Crime Scene Investigation, Juvenile and Criminal Law overview, Police Department Budgeting Activities, Major Crimes and Crime Scene Investigations, Use of Force and K9, CPR and AED certifications and SWAT Team Demonstrations.

Free Workshop… “Take Control of Your Health”
The Cape May County Health Department will present a free six-session health workshop for persons with any ongoing or long-term health condition during Feb. and March. The workshop, “Take Control of Your Health,” will take place at Victorian Towers located at Washington & Ocean Streets in Cape May, New Jersey. Participants in the program will learn how to manage symptoms, how to get started with healthy eating and exercise, how to communicate effectively with your doctor and health care team, how to manage fear, anger and frustration, how to make daily tasks easier and how to get more out of life.
The program, which is open to the public, will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. on Wednesdays, Feb. 26; March 5, 12, 19 and 26, 2014. For more information or to register for the workshop, please call 463-4043.
Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Hosts “Grand – Parenting: The Triumphs and Challenges”
Rutgers Cooperative Extension’s Family and Community Health Sciences Department will hold a discussion session entitled ”Grand – Parenting: The Triumphs and Challenges” for the Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Support Group. The event, coordinated by Marilou Rochford, will be held on Feb. 27, 2014 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Rutgers Cooperative Extension Building located at 355 Courthouse-South Dennis Road, Cape May Court House. (Turn at the light at ACCC, it is the first building on the right). The building is handicap accessible.
The program discussion will examine the complex role and challenges of a grandparent who is raising their grandchildren and will also address the successes of grand parenting. Childcare will be provided for the grandchildren and a light supper for the grandparents and grandchildren will be offered at 5:30 p.m. with the program to follow at 6 p.m. There is no charge for this program, but advanced registration is required.
