By Al Campbell

CREST HAVEN – Two Wildwood High School students designed first and second-place winning entries in the 2013 Cape May County Earth Day Logo Contest. Third place went to an Ocean City Intermediate School pupil.
Shalimar Pagan took first place in the Respect for the Planet themed contest. Her artwork will appear on this year’s Earth Day T-shirt. She also received from Freeholder Marie Hayes a $75 gift card as well as a county “goodie” bag.
Natasha Quinones of Wildwood High School created second place design. She received a $50 gift card and a goodie bag.
Juliet Evangelista of Ocean City Intermediate School won third place and a $50 gift card. She was absent from the April 9 presentation at the freeholders’ meeting, but will receive her prize at her school.
Selection of the top prizes resulted from a field of over 200 entries, Hayes said.
There were also 12 honorable mentions.
Following a photo with the entire freeholder board, Zoo Director Mike Laffey reported what will be included in the April 20 Earth Day celebration at Cape May County Park and Zoo. The day begins with a Fun Run and Walk at 8:30 a.m. A half hour later, the 5K run through the park will begin.
Earth Day will be held from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m., said Laffey.
This year’s main event will also include an environmental magic show.
