VILLAS — Two Lower Township candidates for Ward One council seats have turned down an invitation to participate in a debate Oct. 15 and the event has been canceled.
According to Lower Township Taxpayers Association President Ed Butler, the organization made all required arrangements to sponsor the event including contacting the League of Women Voters to conduct and moderate the debate. The event would have taken place in the Millman Center on Bayshore Road.
Butler said Republican incumbent Councilman Thomas Conrad said he would not attend the debate.
Independent candidate Joseph Will said, “ At this time, I will not attend but if I change my mind, I’ll call you,” according to Butler. He said Will did not call again.
Independent Janet Pitts agree to participate in the debate.
“Yes, I will attend and look forward to debating the issues asked by the residents of Lower Township,” she told Butler.
He said the taxpayers association regrets canceling the debate.
“We feel positive the debate would have been informative and an opportunity for the voters of Lower Township to meet the candidates and confirm which candidate would best represent their short term and long term concerns over the quality of life in Lower Township,” said Butler.”
He quoted from a story in the Cape May Gazette in which Conrad and Will said they would participate in a debate but no organization had come forward to sponsor one.
“The L.T.T.A with the League of Women Voters did offer a debate and these two candidate declined and the other independent candidate accepted,” said Butler.
