RIO GRANDE — With snips of three ceremonial scissors through a bright blue ribbon, Middle Township Committee formally dedicated a new playground at Rio Grande Park on Railroad Avenue Fri., July 6.
Mayor Daniel Lockwood was joined by Committeeman Timothy Donohue and Committeewoman Susan DeLanzo to cut the blue ribbon nestled in the midst of the $22,724 Game Time-Prime Time Walkers Ridge modular unit. Crafted with the young crowd in mind, the unit features a tunnel, twisted slide, straight sliding board and a ladder to climb.
Representing youngsters who will use the facility, limited to those aged 5-12, were Danni Lockwood, 10, the mayor’s daughter, as well as Rio Grande siblings Olivia and Michael Mastalski, 10 and 8, respectively.
The green-and-brown structure, crafted with recycled materials, was erected by a Middle Township Public Works crew, according to Andrew Smith, public works administrative director. Beneath the equipment, to soften any tumbles, is over a foot a mulch, Smith said.
The municipality was recently awarded a grant for new playground equipment in the park. The grant paid for 50 percent of the $22,724 cost of the unit.
Maturano Recreation Company was established in 1978. In the last 28 years, it has become a leader in park and recreation suppliers in the Northeast, according to a release. Game Time is an affiliate of Maturano Recreation and is a national manufacturer of recreation products. Annually the company, through a grant campaign, distributes $5 million in the nation for playgrounds.
