SEA ISLE CITY – Resident Kevin Mertz pleaded with Sea Isle City Council Jan. 14 to improve the environmental degradation he sees, each day, while running on the municipality’s beaches, streets and Promenade. He showed photos of trash strewn about.
“My wife and I moved here about four years ago, and we love it,” said Mertz. “We both are avid runners and bicyclists, and have been shocked at the amount of trash we pick up, each and every day, on the routes we run that take us throughout Sea Isle.
“John F. Kennedy Boulevard and the Promenade seem to be ground zero for this refuse, instead of being a beautiful gateway for our town. People seem to eat and leave the wrappers right where they were sitting, the beer bottles and cans we collect every day are almost endless and the number of cigarette butts that are strewn about is endless, as well. I’ve even seen seagulls with butts in their mouths.
“I talked with a merchant, who said his flower container has at least a dozen butts in it every morning when he opens up. This amount of trash and refuse and the carelessness that goes with it needs to stop, not just for the people who live here, but for the one-week visitor who thinks this is what Sea Isle represents.”
Council members nodded, but there was no immediate reaction from them or Business Administrator George Savastano.
