CAPE MAY – During the city engineer’s report at the Dec. 5 Cape May City Council meeting, a Coast Guard representative joined with Engineer Thomas Thornton to urge a specific solution for traffic calming efforts on a stretch of Pennsylvania Avenue that runs from Pittsburgh Avenue to the gates of the Coast Guard Training Center.
This is an area that is home to a large number of children who attend the city elementary school.
Concerns are high that the wide, two-lane road promotes unintentional speeding.
In November, Thornton presented the council with three options for traffic calming through the use of a median or striping. (See Nov. 11 Herald article for fuller descriptions.)
Thornton and the Coast Guard representative told the city of their preference for what was labeled Option 2 in November.
The option involves the construction of a median that would reduce the traffic lanes to a 10-foot lane each way.
The option also takes into account Coast Guard security concerns at the main gate to the case.
