VILLAS – While law enforcement and fire departments are designed and staffed to maximize services to the community, there is always more to do. More than ever volunteerism has become a need and Lower Township officials are looking into a way for local retired firefighters and police officers to make a difference in their community.
Lower Township Manager Mike Voll wants to tap the resources in the community and see if there is any interest in forming a volunteer safety squad that would provide support services to the police and fire departments.
“We are fortunate to have a number of retired police and firefighters call Lower Township home,” said Voll. “Their experience would be extremely helpful.”
Voll said the volunteers would provide non-hazardous support services, such as directing traffic during busy township events, such as 5k runs and festivals. They would also be helpful in keeping traffic away from accident scenes or working fires.
