AVALON – Avalon, Stone Harbor, and North Wildwood are continuing their fight against the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service over that agency’s use of the Coastal Barrier Resources Act (CBRA) to prevent the use of federal funds for sand removal from Hereford Inlet. The action significantly compromised the most recent beach replenishment efforts in Stone Harbor.
The municipalities jointly filed objections as part of a public comment period regarding plans by Fish and Wildlife to revise and expand the boundaries of the CBRA, thereby further constraining beach replenishment efforts.
The comment period on the proposed revisions to CBRA maps ended July 10.
The three communities remain committed to their position that the use of Hereford Inlet as a borrow area for beach replenishment meets all the requirements of a qualified exception to the CBRA.
