(Cape May Court House)—Middle Township Mayor Dan Lockwood announced that the Monday, September 16th work session and regular meeting of the Middle Township Committee will be held at the Rio Grande Volunteer Fire Company on Route 47 in Rio Grande. The work session meeting to discuss plans at the Ockie Wisting recreational site will begin at 4 p.m., while the regular meeting will be held at 6 p.m.
“We will have very exciting news to share with our township residents and the Rio Grande neighborhood during this meeting”, said Middle Township Mayor Dan Lockwood. “We have moved the meeting to Rio Grande to unveil our conceptual plan for the development of the Ockie Wisting recreational site and we will also discuss our preliminary schedule for the project”.
Middle Township officials recently made a successful application to the Cape May County Open Space Board to secure nearly $600,000 in funding for the development of the Ockie Wisting recreational area, formerly known as Fort Apache. The recreational area is located adjacent to Route 47 in Rio Grande about one mile north of the firehouse.
The development project will include a wildlife observation deck, boardwalk, and fishing pier at the pond area along with a gazebo and picnic area. Other improvements at the site will include a playground, two miles of various walking trails, five soccer fields, a demonstration garden, and a stage for concerts and performances. Many township boards, councils, and organizations have offered letters of support for this project. Partnerships have been created with the Cape Express Soccer Club and the Cape May County Disc Golf Association.
Middle Township has recently completed a comprehensive Open Space and Recreation Plan. Interviews with 25 sports and environmental groups were conducted along with 188 public surveys and two public meetings.
“The development of the Ockie Wisting recreational area has widespread support throughout Middle Township and full support from the Cape May County Open Space Board”, said Deputy Mayor Tim Donohue. We are excited to present more information to the public on September 16th. This project will result in new recreational opportunities and increased economic activity to Rio Grande and throughout Middle Township”.
