Thornton Way Paved in County Complex

By Al Campbell

CREST HAVEN – Paving of Gerald M. Thornton Way took place July 22, 11 months after the road was named for the freeholder director. Paving work resulted in county employees, whose offices were in the Administration Building, having to park in front, not the rear lot. Also affected were Health Department employees and access to Special Services School swimming pool.
According to County Engineer Dale Foster, the work was done by South State Inc. of Bridgeton. The contract was for $587,031. Included in the project was reconstruction and widening of Thornton Way from Crest Haven Road to the rear entrance of Crest Haven Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
Also included was reconstruction of two county parking lots; construction of a new parking lot for Cape Counseling; drainage improvements; new sidewalk construction; replacement of deteriorated or settled sidewalks and refurbishment of fire hydrants.
The road was officially renamed by freeholders’ action Aug. 27, 2013 in honor of Freeholder Director Gerald M. Thornton.
Thornton Way connects Crest Haven Road in the county complex east of Garden State Parkway Exit 11 to the rear entrances of the county Administration Building and Crest Haven Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
On that day, 11 months ago, Vice Director Leonard Desiderio noted there likely would not be any delay paving Thornton Way. Thornton shot back in jest, no more than the paving in Sea Isle City, where Desiderio is mayor.
