CREST HAVEN – Freeholder Director Gerald Thornton announced in a release that he had reached out to representatives of Cape May Coast Guard to obtain permission to outreach to individuals and families impacted by the federal government partial shutdown.
At Thornton’s direction, with the assistance of Freeholder Jeffrey Pierson, the county Division of Social Services has coordinated with Lt. Cmdr. Gary Murphy, staff Judge Advocate, to disseminate information on applying for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), Work First New Jersey (WFNJ), and Social Services for the Homeless (SSH), utility/rent arrears prevention funding. Additionally, Social Service employees will be present at an informational session, hosted by the Coast Guard, to inform impacted employees of local services.
“Cape May County is a Coast Guard Community. These men and women are serving our country without pay, and we want to assist in any way that we can,” stated Thornton.
“As a brigadier general and a freeholder we must take care of the people who take care of our country,” stated Pierson, who is the liaison to the Division of Social Services. “I am happy we can assist these members of our community who do so much for us.”
Furloughed employees and employees working without pay may be eligible for SNAP, WFNJ, and/or SSH benefits. Although the SNAP program is included in the shut-down, efforts are still being made to encourage those impacted by the shutdown to apply for benefits as soon as possible.
