STONE HARBOR – The Northern diamondback terrapin is part of the ecosystem of the marshlands along the county’s barrier islands. One of the only turtles which flourish in brackish water, the terrapin nesting season is from early June to mid-July. During that period, one of the greatest dangers the terrapin faces is the motor vehicle.
At the July 16 meeting of Stone Harbor Borough Council, Wetlands Institute Executive Director Lenore Tedesco shared statistics which show a record year for terrapin deaths on causeways through the marshes.
“In an average year, we see about 500 deaths on the roadways. This year, we had 750,” she said.
Road barriers like the rigid tubing seen along several county roads remain as major impediments to terrapins crossing busy thoroughfares.
