STONE HARBOR – Stone Harbor Tax Collector Deborah Candelore reported to Borough Council Feb. 6 that she had unexpectedly developed a new set of skills.
“I didn’t know it, but I have become an income tax specialist, a CPA and a financial advisor, all in December.” What Candelore referenced was the inordinate level of calls and contact in her office at year-end caused by the passage of a new Federal tax law.
“Everyone wanted to pay their taxes early,” she said.
In 2016, Candelore said, residents paid just under $900,000 in pre-paid taxes. In December 2017, that number jumped to $3.343 million, an increase of almost $2.5 million.
She noted that some people paid for tax quarters for which she did not yet have official rates since the 2018 budget was still being formulated.
“I told them I would accept the payments, but I would not do refunds,” she said.
