WILDWOOD CREST ─ Bids are set to “go out” for completing the work slated for Sunset Lake Park, according to Mayor Don Cabrera. A two-phase project, Sunset Lake is appropriated $700,000 for its stabilization while the recreational aspect is still underway.
Part of mitigation after Superstorm Sandy (2012), improvements to the area take consideration of the wetland environment. According to a recently-passed ordinance, improvements include “construction or reconstruction of the…shoreline, including but not limited to importing, and placing of structural fill.”
Constructing a stabilized bank by using concrete mats and removing excess rock and debris from the shoreline below will also take place. Mitigating shellfish habitat and site restoration add to the complexity.
The second phase regards the project’s recreational aspect. Cabrera told the Herald the entire project is under Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the six-year deadline of using appropriated funds is December 2018. Reimbursement is promised by FEMA if the deadline is met.
Cabrera wishes to finish the project by December, thus requiring work to begin after the summer season. Improvements include water fountains, bike racks, kayak launch, low-level lighting, landscaping, and a designated fishing area.
“One project, one contractor,” is the borough’s goal. Instead of elongating the process, finding one contractor to carry out and finish both phases is desired.
Commissioner David Thompson suggested an artist’s rendering be placed at Sunset Lake to give residents and guests a glimpse of the finished project.
