CREST HAVEN — Cape May County freeholders hosted the annual Student Government Day on Tue., April 12, as part of the county’s National County Government Month celebration.
Eighteen students representing nine Cape May County High Schools participated in the event that concluded with the students conducting the Freeholders’ meeting after spending the day learning about the role of county government.
The day began for the students with lunch at the Cape May County Special Services School District’s Back Porch Café hosted by Education Freeholder M. Susan Sheppard. The students heard from Freeholder Director Daniel Beyel and other officials who explained various aspects of county government.
Freeholder Sheppard said, “This was my first Student Government Day as Freeholder and I was very impressed with all of the participants. It was a positive experience for everyone involved and it is a pleasure to be in the company of such bright and talented young adults.”
The students toured the Cape May County Public Safety Training Center, watched a demonstration by the Sheriff’s K-9 Unit and visited the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center.
Also, students visited the County Administration Building for the County Government “Open House” where they met with representatives from various county departments. The final stop was a briefing with the Freeholders and County Administrator Stephen O’Connor. The students then presided over the regular meeting of the Board of Chosen Freeholders.
The following students participated in Student Government Day 2011: Amber Hope and Jenna Ankney, Cape Christian Academy; Myranda Langlois and Serena Seijo, Cape Educational Compact; Stephen Lawler and Jerald (J.J.) Maldonado, Cape May County High School; Morgan Scully and Richard Ziegler, Cape May County Technical High School; Susie Booth and Sarah Peck, Lower Cape May Regional High School; James Dylan Mooers and Erin Wannen, Middle Township High School; Lindsay Vetter and Jayne Snyder, Ocean City High School; Mark Rucci and Eric Komar, Wildwood Catholic High School; and Courtney Davis and Danille Aydelotte, Wildwood High School.
Freeholder M. Susan Sheppard concluded, “The students’ knowledge of the issues and their ability to convey their concerns was encouraging. We hope that their involvement today is just the beginning of their participation in the governmental process.”
