Student from 1920s Attends Fishing Creek School Fundraiser

By Jack Fichter

VILLAS — A weekend fundraiser to help restore the historic Fishing Creek School was successful and included a visit from a student who attended the one room schoolhouse in the 1920s, according to Lower Township Mayor Michael Beck
He said he was pleased to meet Ella Elliott, who was a student of the Fishing Creek School from 1923-1927. In those days, the school was kindergarten through the fourth grade, he said.
Also attending the fundraiser was a granddaughter of the people who purchased the school building at auction in the 1920s, said Beck.
He said the schoolhouse would be more than a “museum piece.”
“The ultimate goal is to use that for the purpose it was created in 1888 which is to help our kids,” said Beck.
“We are hoping to partner with the school to create an early childhood intervention program down there once we complete it,” he continued. “There’s something that’s kind of special about that, the fact that it was built by a lot of Civil War veterans…”
Beck said he was pleased that 130 years later, the school would return to educational use after being under private ownership for 60 to 70 years. The state has owned the building for 10 years and during that time, the school was not maintained.
“We’ve kind of corrected that and we’re moving forward and hope to finish up the outside shortly,” said Beck.
He said the Friends of the Fishing Creek School were planning future events. Councilman Erik Simonsen entertained the crowd at the event with live music
