CAPE MAY — The intersection of Beach Avenue (County Road No. 604) and Madison Avenue (County Road No. 653) will be closed starting March 17 to replace a collapsing storm drain pipe under the road.
According to a release, the intersection is expected to be closed for approximately one week. During repairs, motorists will be directed to use New Jersey/Stockton Avenue to bypass the construction work at the intersection.
F.W. Shawl & Sons, Inc. of Marmora is installing a wellpoint system to decrease the amount of water at the intersection in order to replace the storm drain pipe. County Engineer Dale Foster said, “It appears that the existing 36-inch diameter corrugated metal pipe has collapsed due to corrosion of the metal. The top of the pipe is located approximately 3.5 feet below the road surface.”
F.W. Shawl, who received an emergency contract to conduct the work, will open trench across Beach Avenue for the removal and replacement of approximately 36 feet of storm drain pipe. Foster added, “The replacement of this pipe is a crucial component of the storm water runoff system of the City. The Madison Avenue storm drain system starts at Washington Avenue and eventually discharges through an ocean outfall pipe. All of the side streets along Madison Avenue drain into the system. The runoff from the Madison Avenue system dumps into a large wet well located under the promenade and is pumped out to the ocean.” Areas about Madison Avenue have some of the lowest elevations within the City and were subject to chronic flooding prior to the installation of the Madison Avenue pump station in 1986.
