STONE HARBOR — Borough council voted 4-2 to go out to bid for a proposed bike lane at a regular meeting Oct. 2.
The proposed lane would run along Second Avenue from 80th Street to the point at 122nd Street and be open to bikers, skateboarders and roller or in-line skaters.
Councilman Brian Levinson said the bike lane “should help to focus or organize travel,” while Councilwoman Anne Wannen and Councilman Karl Giulian hesitated to support the motion.
Wannen suggested council eliminate a span between 93rd and 99th streets from the pro-posal; an area within and immediately surrounding the 96th Street business district and the location of a large traffic light intersection at Second Avenue.
She said eliminating the lane in that area would warn users to continue through at their own risk.
Giulian, who is chairman of the Administration and Finance committee, noted possible costs of $40,000 to complete the project before stating the borough already has a “rea-sonably safe atmosphere” without the lane designation.
Neither Wannen nor Giulian voted in favor, but Council President Barry Mastrangelo and council members Randall Bauer, Julian Miraglia and Levinson motioned it forward.
The bike lane will go out to bid Oct. 30 at 10 a.m.
