Stone Harbor Post Office Marks Adopt-a-Dog Month with County Shelter

By Press Release

STONE HARBOR — The Stone Harbor Post Office and the Cape May County Animal Shelter celebrated National Adopt-a-Shelter Dog month last Sat., Oct. 9 at the Stone Harbor Post Office with a special, two-hour only, postmark cancellation for the Animal Rescue – Adopt a Shelter Pet commemorative stamps.
Judy Davies-Dunhour, shelter manager, and Ashley Deaton, shelter staff member, brought several lovable shelter cats and adorable shelter dogs from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and were on hand explaining the benefits of adopting a local shelter animal.
Combined with the Cape May County Animal Shelter’s efforts, the Stone Harbor Post Office’s special stamp cancellation event increased public awareness about sheltered pets, encouraged pet adoption, and promoted humane and responsible pet care.
The United States Postal Service’s 2010 Social Awareness Stamps: Animal Rescue – Adopt a Shelter Pet can be purchased from your local post office, by calling 1-800-STAMP-24, or visiting www.usps.com. The cost is $8.80 for a sheet of twenty 44-cent stamps.
As of Sept. 20, 11,041,290 panes of stamps have been sold or nearly 221 million individual stamps. An average commemorative stamp run is 65 million individual stamps. There were 300 million Animal Rescue: Adopt a Shelter Pet stamps printed — 4.5 times more than average.
The Stone Harbor Post Office, its Postmaster Bruce Lavenia, and its Sales and Service Associates, Marleen Moore and Denise Serafinelli distributed complimentary USA Philatelic Magazines, Animal Rescue: Adopt a Shelter Pet reusable tote bags, and Animal Rescue: Adopt a Shelter Pet key chains, to the attendees of this special postmark cancellation event; while the supplies lasted.
Every year, 6 to 8 million cats and dogs enter animal shelters, and of that number, nearly half are euthanized. Although the problem seems overwhelming, the key to the solution is adopting a shelter pet when seeking a new companion and ensuring that the animal is spayed or neutered.
