STONE HARBOR — The Stone Harbor Post Office and the Cape May County Animal Shelter celebrated National Adopt-a-Shelter Dog month last Sat., Oct. 9 at the Stone Harbor Post Office with a special, two-hour only, postmark cancellation for the Animal Rescue – Adopt a Shelter Pet commemorative stamps.
Judy Davies-Dunhour, shelter manager, and Ashley Deaton, shelter staff member, brought several lovable shelter cats and adorable shelter dogs from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and were on hand explaining the benefits of adopting a local shelter animal.
Combined with the Cape May County Animal Shelter’s efforts, the Stone Harbor Post Office’s special stamp cancellation event increased public awareness about sheltered pets, encouraged pet adoption, and promoted humane and responsible pet care.

Every year, 6 to 8 million cats and dogs enter animal shelters, and of that number, nearly half are euthanized. Although the problem seems overwhelming, the key to the solution is adopting a shelter pet when seeking a new companion and ensuring that the animal is spayed or neutered.
