STONE HARBOR — The Borough of Stone Harbor now has its own radio station as a way of communicating with local residents for emergency situations.
If a natural disaster such as a hurricane or winter storm or any serious emergency occurs in Stone Harbor, the Borough’s Emergency Management officials will be transmitting information, instructions, and advising residents on the emergency’s status by way of a low power Borough radio station.
WQMB837 is the call letter designation of a 10- watt Emergency Radio Advisory System purchased from Information Station Specialists of Zeeland, Mich., which operates on 1670, AM.
The installation of the antenna, radio’s transmitter, and workstation took place in August. Signage directing residents and visitors to tune in will be in place in October. Community information will be broadcast continuously, and during times of emergencies the program will be interrupted to provide information about the emergency.
“During the blizzard of 2009, all communications were lost and we were unable to provide updated information to our residents. Now with this AM station, the Borough can remain in touch with all the citizens of Stone Harbor” Emergency Management Coordinator Ken Hawk said.
The station can be listened to on 1670 AM. Tune into the station in Stone Harbor as well as on Stone Harbor Boulevard as you approach town.
Stone Harbor officials are pleased to add this additional method of communication to residents and visitors in addition to the current Emergency Management sirens and reverse 911 systems already in place.
