‘Still a Speedway,’ Dennis Committee Learns, Motorists Ignore Road’s Posted Speed Limits

DENNISVILLE – Dennis Township Committee passed its consent agenda Nov. 2 with a unanimous vote and no public comment. Among items on it was a letter from the Department of Agriculture which reported that there are no major infestations of gypsy moth egg masses.
Another item authorized Mayor John Murphy to sign a letter to the county to continue the shared services agreement for the use of various county equipment.
“Still a Speedway”
During the public comment portion, Dennisville resident Robert Grace said “I’m still living on Speedway Boulevard (Route 610/Petersburg-Woodbine Road) and I’m scared that we’re really going to have a bad thing happen there because of the lack of enforcement of the speed limit.”
At the stretch of road where Grace lives, identified as around the railroad tracks, the speed limit is 25 mph. He noted, “If I am going 24 mph, there are pickup trucks and other large vehicles that will speed right by me even though there’s a double yellow line at that point. I was weeding a flower bed by the side of the road and a truck passed and if I hadn’t rolled out of the way I do think I would have been hit.”
Grace urged committee to see what enforcement efforts can be identified, perhaps stationing a state trooper at that point until motorists learn to obey the traffic rules at that section of the highway.
Committee member Donald Tozer replied that he had visited Grace’s home after his previous complaint but he wasn’t there and would be willing to go again.
“When is the worst time that the speeding occurs?” he asked. Grace replied, “Come by in the evening, the worst hours are 6 p.m. to around 7:30 p.m. You really need to get the county to pay attention since the traffic signs are not meaning much.”
Garage Lift Needed?
Grace also commented that he “was shocked” when he visited the garage of the township’s Public Works Department and saw an employee working on a vehicle propped up by jacks instead of on a lift.
He said he thought committee should consider quick purchase of a lift especially since it was part of the budget included in the latest bond items.
“My company and I work on vehicles all the time with no lift, we use jacks, and there’s no issue,” said Tozer. “We’ve never had a problem but we can talk about this, consider the safety, cost and efficiency issues, we need to discuss your idea, it’s a good idea, as a committee.”
