State Police: Jet Ski Crackdown Worked Wonders

STATE POLICE RELEASE:
WEST TRENTON — Last year, troopers from the New Jersey State Police Marine Services Bureau and the Auto Unit launched a month-long investigation targeting personal watercraft rental establishments along the South Jersey Shore. Troopers performed surveillance in plain clothes from unmarked boats and posed as renters of personal watercraft (PWC) to see if companies complied with the laws.
As a result of last year’s investigation 64 summonses for violation of Title 13 were handed out to company owners from Atlantic City to Cape May and the permit of one vendor was revoked to run a “rental operation area.” Such violations included, Failure to Properly Instruct Renters and Supervisors failing to have a Boating Safety Certificate.
These vendors have learned their lesson, because a similar operation was conducted this year resulting in only 2 summonses issued for Title 13 violations. Troopers’ enforcements efforts have clearly contributed to the safety of personal watercraft renters in our state.
