State Police and Wildwood Beach Patrol Teach Surf Rescue to First Responders

By Press Release

WILDWOOD– The New Jersey State Police and Wildwood Beach Patrol held a jointly run Open Water Rescue Course this weekend. The courses are designed for professional rescuers including police, fire and EMS personnel who may need to rescue victims from the water.
Staff Sergeant John Schreiner of the New Jersey State Police Marine Services Bureau, Atlantic City Station is coordinating the training and is one of the primary instructors. Schreiner grew up on the beach, and his father was a life guard for 47 years. He knows the value of this training.
We think of surf rescue as the sole domain of the life guard, but after hours people are still getting into trouble in the water. This training gives first responders the skills to preserve their own lives while saving others, said Sergeant Schreiner.
The South Jersey Chiefs of the Beach Patrols has coordinated with Schreiner to offer instructors and venues for the training. The organization oversees beach patrol operations from Brigantine to Cape May.
