WEST CAPE MAY – Earlier this week, the state Department of Fire Safety visited the West Cape May Volunteer Fire Company the second time this summer, examining detailed documents of its firefighter training and certifications.
At a Wed., July 28 Borough Commission meeting, Commissioner Ramsey Geyer provided an update on inspections of the volunteer fire company requested by the borough. He said, to his knowledge, the Department of Fire Safety found no errors.
The inspectors examined detailed maintenance records of equipment.
“They spent most of the day going through those records and getting all those certifications,” said Geyer.
He said inspectors from the Department of Fire Safety would return in the next three weeks to undertake an in-depth visual inspection of all the apparatus and the firehouse. Geyer said he believed that would be the inspectors’ final visit to the fire company.
The state Public Employees Occupational Safety and Health division has scheduled a return visit to the firehouse for Aug. 19.
“It’s moving along, everything is being scrutinized to very in-dept detail,” said Geyer.
In May, Geyer contacted the state Department of Community Affairs Department of Fire Safety and requested to have a team of qualified fire personnel come to the borough and do a review of the fire company’s records, training, equipment and certifications.
In addition, the state Public Employees Occupational Safety and Health division was also contacted to come to West Cape May to look at the fire hall, procedures and documentation.
The West Cape May Volunteer Fire Company passed two state inspections in June with no major errors cited.
