TRENTON – Gov. Phil Murphy has cut $335 million in new state education funding, which was promised in February, before the coronavirus pandemic rattled New Jersey.
Only three school districts in Cape May County were a part of that expected increase in state aid. This will mean a reduction of almost $86,000 in Ocean City, with minimal cuts of $624 in West Wildwood and $322 in West Cape May.
The state has received $280 million in federal relief for K-12 school districts. That stimulus funding is aimed at additional costs incurred due to the pandemic and is not an addition to the regular school district budget.
All of this is part of the enormous uncertainty surrounding school budgets for the 2020-2021 academic year.
Murphy said that state aid to schools is in jeopardy, as the state deals with huge shortfalls in revenue. Cape May County was already experiencing a reduction in state aid as part of a new funding formula.
