Smoke-free Beach Dilemma

By Camille Sailer

SEA ISLE CITY – At its June 12 meeting, Sea Isle City’s City Council noted that it may soon need to address smoking on its beaches given that New Jersey would be the first state to ban smoking and vaping on all beaches and public parks if Gov. Phil Murphy signs a bill that passed the Legislature. “It seems pretty certain that the governor will sign the bill,” said Council member John Feeley, “so we will need to get ready.” Council Chair Mary Tighe said, “We’ll figure it out if it happens, and will probably set aside 15 percent of the beach for this. And I believe this will be another unfunded mandate from the state.” According to legislative information, the total ban would take effect 180 days after being signed; smoking would still be allowed in parking lots adjacent to beaches and parks. Golf courses were explicitly exempted in the bill. Environmentalists have pointed out that cigarette butts are among the top types of waste collected on state beaches and e-cigarette liquid vials have residue of concentrated nicotine that is harmful if played with or ingested by children or animals.
